KCJH Mav Movie Makers Produce First Video
At Kiowa County Jr. High, students have the opportunity to join a leadership group called Impact. Within Impact, there are several service committees, one of which is the Mav Movie Maker group. Students go through a selection process in order to be on this committee. The goal is that this committee can use video production skills to help promote positive messages at school and for the school through the use of technology skills. In addition to that, students (at a very young age) are learning valuable career-specific skills.
"This is the first year for this [video production] committee. Our Kiowa County Media Center is up and running and already utilizing high school students. I just thought if we began training middle school students in the basics, they would be ready to jump in with both feet as soon as they get into high school. This committee will serve as a "feeder program" for KCHS Video Club members," said Kathy Headrick, Impact sponsor.
Erik T, KCJH 8th grader, was selected for this committee. He is enjoying the experience and has decided that he is most interested in being a camera operator. When asked how he felt about being selected, he said, "Being picked shows that other people think you are responsible." He and all the other Mav Movie Makers are learning about all aspects of video production, including script writing, voiceovers, editing and the already mentioned camera work. In addition to that, they will get to use the green screen at the Kiowa County Media Center, and they have also been invited to observe in the media trailer during live stream events like our home ballgames.
Other members of the committee are Morgen U (8th grade), Josh C (7th grade), Jackie T, McKelvie M and Kiauna B (all 6th grade). These students have all been able to work with Grant Neuhold, Programming Technical Producer at the Kiowa County Media Center. Neuhold's work with students, both at the high school level and the middle school level, is part of a cooperative agreement between Kiowa County Schools and Kiowa County Media Center.
The following video is a training project that the Mav Movie Makers produced in just two workshops with Neuhold at the Media Center. He says the kids did all the work. They did the camera work, wrote the script, did the voiceovers, selected the music and did most of the editing. The following link will take you to their promotional video for the Kiowa County Museum.
