Frequently Asked Questions

Over the past few days, we have seen some drastic changes in our country due to the COVID-19 virus that have affected all of us in ways that we never imagined. We have seen basketball tournaments cancelled, entire sports seasons ended before they even begin, and the end of the school year as we know it. As we head in to these uncertain times, there have been a number of questions asked about the remainder of the school year and what it will look like for families. In this section, we are going to try to answer some of these frequently asked questions. Please check back often because we will be adding additional questions as we receive them.

  • Is school closed for the year?
    • All school facilities are closed for the remainder of the school year. The teaching staff will continue to be available and working with students to finish the school year academically. There will be educational expectations and materials for the students.
  • When will classes start back up for my student?
    • During the week of March 23-27, teachers will be developing lesson plans to be shared with the students virtually. During this time, students will not be having class. Our goal is to be ready for lessons and instruction to be presented to students beginning the week of March 30.
  • Will breakfast and lunch be offered for students?
    • Details are being worked out for children ages 1-18 to be able to receive breakfast and lunch. More information and a consent form will be made available by Monday, March 23. Our hope is to have meals available by Wednesday, March 25.
  • Will I receive a refund for the meals that I have paid for?
    • Yes, lunch refunds will be mailed to families. The office will be working on this in the hope to have it completed by the end of the month.
  • In this new virtual format, are parents and students expected to spend 8:05am to 3:30pm doing school work?
    • No. The teachers will provide some required work and some extended learning opportunities. The amount of time the students spend will vary, but required work should not fill an entire day.
  • How will parents who work all day also instruct their student?
    • Staff will be working on a plan the week of March 23-27 for virtual instruction. In many cases, depending on the age of the student, the student may be able to do the work themselves. The district understands that for PreK-2 students there will have to be some adult supervision. Trust that we are considering many scenarios.
  • When can I pick up my student's supplies and personal items from the school?
    • USD 422 is working to create a schedule for parents and students to be able to come to the building to pick up their personal items along with any needed materials for their continued education this semester. We are anticipating this date to be Monday, March 30, but it could be sooner.
  • When will the semester end?
    • Our current last day of school is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18. This date may change as the district works through all the requirements needed for the Continuous Learning Plan that the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is asking each district to create. This plan will be presented to our local board of education for approval. The district will file this plan with the KSDE.
  • What if I don't have a computer or internet at home?
    • USD 422 is working with local internet providers to develop options for parents. The district will also be making Chromebooks and iPads available for checkout to families that will need devices in the home for their students to use for school work.
  • Will there be any extracurricular activities available for students during this time?
    • At this time, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has cancelled all extracurricular activities for the remainder of the school year.
  • Will USD 422 be hosting High School graduation?
    • At this time, High School graduation has been postponed.  The district will work to reschedule graduation once the restrictions are lifted.
  • Will USD 422 be having Driver's Education this summer?
    • At this time, Driver's Education is on hold while we wait to see if the restrictions will be lifted. Students should hold on to their enrollment forms. More information on Driver's Eduction will be released once it is available.
