The Kiowa County 7th and 8th graders in English have finished a poetry writing unit, based on the poetry unit, "Breaking Loose with Language" in the text The Lively Art of Writing-Understanding Forms by Lucile Vaughan Payne. They start by getting used to experimenting with, and using their more creative writing skills by completing poetic forms like: Complete these lines, then repeat them with different words that have a color and a comparison in them. Then repeat the process again with different words, colors, and comparisons. "I seem to be . . . . But I really am .. . . . "

From there they learn and complete more creative, complex, and varied forms of poetry, like the French cinquain and the Japanese haiku.
After this they correct all their graded poetry assignments, select a perfect example of each form they wrote, and make a booklet of their poems to take home with them for posterity. Then they pick their most favorite poem they wrote from their booklet and design a poster for it. After being displayed in the junior high hallway, they can take them home.

Along with the poem at the top of the page, here are a few samples of some of the student's work.
