The Guidance Counseling Curriculum at Greensburg Elementary School and Kiowa County Junior High School covers three main domains:

1.  Social / Emotional Guidance:  This domain is where the counselor works with students as they develop and become aware of feelings and behaviors.  The counselor also works with students as they interact with others in their social setting.  Most of this type of counseling happens in a whole-class setting, but both students and parents can request individual counseling settings.  It is important to note that a school counselor cannot diagnose emotional and psychological disorders, nor can they treat students. If students need that kind of treatment, the counselor will refer students / parents to alternative treatment facilities.

2.  Academic Guidance:  This domain is where the counselor works with students as they develop academically.  The guidance counselor is involved in the Student Improvement Team, helps students select electives (as they enter junior high), works with students who are struggling academically, and helps with the transition from junior high to high school.

3.  Career Guidance:  This domain is where the counselor works with students as they consider the world of work.  It is never too soon to introduce students to a variety of careers and get them thinking about their interests.  We hope that students become curious about career possibilities and each year (beginning in kindergarten), students will explore careers.  It is more important for junior high students to begin thinking about career choices as they choose an academic path in high school.  Students in Greensburg Junior High will spend about 6 weeks discussing careers and considering educational requirements for those careers.

All students in grades K-8 will meet (as a class) with the counselor once a week for about a 20-30 minute session.  During that time, students will be working in one of the three domains with grade appropriate activities and discussions.  If parents have any questions regarding these weekly sessions, they should feel free to contact the school.
