Forensics Team Earns 6th Place at State

After the REO Speedwagon concert on Main Street and the dedication of the new playground at the Big Well Park on Friday, May 2, the GHS Forensics team headed to Salina to compete in both the State Festival and the 1A State Championship Tournament.

That afternoon, the students performed “The Dullsville Mystery” at Kansas Wesleyan University, earning praise from the State judge, who called the play “fun” and noted that because he had enjoyed the show, he was sure that the community of Greensburg had been entertained as well.  The judge gave the students a I Rating and gold medals for their efforts.  Members of the cast are Shannon Webster, Levi Smith, Taylor Schmidt, Jordan Bousman, Shane Engelken, Kyle Beltz, Renee McVey, Alexsis Fleener, Charlotte Coggins, Charlsea Crotts, Katlin Senst, Maci Colclazier, Cheyenne Morehead, Jordan Eller, and Kiairla Beltz.

The next morning, twelve Rangers, under the supervision of Coach Kim McMurry, Asst. Coach Sue Greenleaf, and sponsors Dennis Smith and Gail Coggins, traveled to Salina Central High School to participate in 1A State Champs against 37 schools from across Kansas.  After a long day of excellent competition, the Rangers found themselves being honored for a sixth place team finish overall.   It should be noted that Jetmore won the State tournament, while Ashland took fourth as a team.  Greensburg High finished just six points behind the Bluejays and only five points behind the fifth place Olpe squad.   As evidenced by their domination at the State level, the SPIAA league very obviously represents the best of 1A Kansas Forensics programs, a fact of which all league schools can be proud.  Individual results for State Champs are as follows:  Justin Brokar – Second place, Extemporaneous Speaking and Seventh place, Original Oration; Connor Staats – Second place, Original Oration; Shannon Webster – Thirteenth place, Humorous Solo Acting; Jordan Eller – Thirteenth place, Prose; Charlsea Crotts – Eleventh place, Prose; Morgan Tyree – Eight place, Poetry; Katlin Senst – Ninth place, Original Oration; Taylor Schmidt – Eight place, Original Oration.  Other students earning points for the Rangers were Renee McVey, Jessi Eller, Cheyenne Morehead, and Maci Colclazier.

While the Champs qualifiers competed at SCHS, GHS also sent eight students in eleven different events, along with their sponsor Jean McKinney, back to Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, May 3, to participate in the All-class State Festival.  Earning I Ratings and gold medals for their performances were Alexsis Fleener and Charlotte Coggins in Duet Acting, Charlotte Coggins in Prose, Jordan Bousman in Prose, Lindy McKinney in Poetry, Darin McVay in Poetry, and Kendal Melton in Prose.  Earning II’s were Alexsis Fleener in Prose, Levi Smith in both Extemporaneous Speaking and Original Oration, Lindy McKinney in Prose, and Timothy Morton in Poetry.

The Ranger Forensics students have enjoyed an extremely successful season, taking fourth place as a team at South Barber, fourth overall at Medicine Lodge, second place at the Kinsley Novice tournament, first place at Norwich, fourth place at Pratt, first place at the Spearville Invitational, second place at the SPIAA Tournament (including a second place finish in the SPIAA one-act play contest), first place at Minneola, and second place at South Central.  While seniors Sara McVay, Kasha Charlton, and Justin Brokar will be missed, the future of GHS Drama & Forensics seems bright, considering the amazing amount of talent found among the underclassmen on the squad.
